PENTAPHARM do Brasil

When innovation meets nature

In order to ensure the continuous supply of snake venom of guaranteed quality and sufficient quantity of the Brazilian lance adder Bothrops moojeni , the supplier of a key venom used by PENTAPHARM, a large-scale venom-producing snake farm composed of open-air parks in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brasil was founded in 1981.

Focusing on animal welfare issues, PENTAPHARM has elaborated, during the past 30 years, a unique approach for the breeding and housing of venomous snakes. Meanwhile, some 10,000 specimens of this snake species are bred and housed in PENTAPHARM DO BRASIL, making PENTAPHARM the biggest snake breeder and keeper in the world.

Living Area
The natural biotope of the lance adder is characterized by the vegetation found on the central-Brazilian plateau which is strongly influenced by a long lasting period of dryness. The vegetation called ”Cerado” consists of a kind of bushy savannah interspersed with marshy zones.

The living area of the lance adder may be described in simplified form as follows:
A zone of protection separated from a pond by a grass-covered surface which itself contains a number of elements essential for the thermoregulation of the snake. In the breeding farm this living area is reproduced on a small scale in each production unit.
